COHASSET - Cohasset Police Lt. William Quigley was presented the 2007 Award for Excellence in Police Service by the Greater Boston Police Council (GBPC) at its annual meeting on Monday, Dec. 3.
The GBPC, with an Executive Board of 10 police chiefs, provides the Boston Area Police Emergency Radio Network (BAPERN), Simulation Based Incident Command Training and Collective Purchasing for its 143 member agencies.
The GBPC gives an annual award to an officer who best utilizes the BAPERN system to assist in resolving a law enforcement incident.
Numerous people from the 143 agencies were nominated for the 2007 award.
Lt. Quigley was chosen for his monitoring of the BAPERN system after a State Trooper was fired upon while attempting to stop a vehicle involved in a previous robbery. A police pursuit followed and made its way down Route 3A heading toward Cohasset.
Lt. Quigley’s monitoring this situation led to the use of “stop sticks” on the suspect vehicle and to the suspect’s eventual arrest.
Chief James Hussey said this is a great example of being able to communicate with other law enforcement jurisdictions.
“This dangerous felon had made his way through numerous communities, showing a total disregard for anyone’s safety,” Hussey said. “Lt. Quigley’s monitoring of the situation via the BAPERN radio system, and quick thinking, led to the capture of this suspect.”
