On Saturday, November 15, 2008, at about 11am, Cohasset Police Officers responded to a Cedar Street residence to investigate a report of a breaking and entering in progress. A female resident was reporting that a male was attempting to climb into her bedroom window.
On arrival officers were able to determine that the male was scared off by the resident and that he fled into the nearby woods. Cohasset Police, with the assistance of the Hull and Hingham Police K-9 units, established a perimeter, and began a coordinated search for the suspect.
The Cohasset Police Department sent out a priority “reverse 9-1-1” call to all of the residents in the area alerting them of the manhunt.
At about 1pm, the Hingham Police K-9 “Axel”, along with his handler, Police Officer James Foss, located the suspect secreted in a wooded area in the back yards off of Fisher Road, which is approximately ¼ mile from Cedar Street. The suspect refused to surrender and refused to comply with the officers orders. The suspect was contacted by K-9 “Axel” multiple times but was uninjured because he was protected by a heavy layer of clothing. It took officers from Hingham, Hull, and Cohasset, to bring the suspect under control and into custody.
The suspect, who has a long criminal history, has been identified as: Stephen J. Carney, 44 years of age, 4 Spinnaker Hill Lane, Hull, MA. He is being held on $5000 cash bail at the Cohasset Police Station. He is charged with: B&E daytime and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned in Quincy District Court on Monday, November 17, 2008.
Cohasset Police Lieutenant William Quigley said that “This was an excellent example of team work. Cohasset, Hingham, and Hull Police, working in unison, did an exceptional job and were able to take this person off of the street.”
