Created by CPD on 26th May 2009, 10:11 am

Cohasset Police officers responded to a report of a minor motor vehicle crash on North Main Street near the MBTA commuter rail station on Monday, May 25, 2009, at about 1:20pm.
When officers arrived they found that the driver of a 1995 Toyota Corolla went off of the road and got hung-up on rocks and ledge. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Rafael Gonzalez MELENDEZ, (40) years of age, from 16 Dacia Street, Dorchester, MA. As officers were trying to determine how the accident occurred and if MELENDEZ had a driver’s license, he began to act suspiciously, and refused to obey officer’s commands.
As MELENDEZ was being interviewed by police, officers observed him attempt to conceal small bags of powdered cocaine. The officers arrested MELENDEZ and a quantity of cocaine was seized. A subsequent search of the Toyota Corolla by officers, later including Scituate K-9 Officer Brian McLaughlin and his partner “Felix”, revealed several more bags of what is thought to be cocaine.
MELENDEZ was brought to the Cohasset Police Station where he was held overnight on $10,000 cash bail. He will be arraigned in Quincy District Court on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. He was charged with the following offenses:
1. Possession of Class B drugs with the intent to distribute
2. Unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle
3. Failure to drive within marked lanes
Cohasset Police Lieutenant William Quigley said, “This was a great piece of police work by the officers on scene that likely interrupted a delivery of illegal drugs to a person in the area.”
