COHASSET -
On Friday, June 12, 2009, at approximately 9:25am, Cohasset Police Officers responded to the intersection of Main Street and Depot Court, in Cohasset Village, for a report of a large construction vehicle that had crashed into several parked cars.
On arrival, officers found that the operator of a (10) wheeled dump truck lost control of the vehicle while turning from Main Street onto Depot Court. The driver of the truck went onto the sidewalk hitting a large trash container, then crossed into on-coming traffic hitting an SUV, and then finally coming to rest after hitting (3) parked cars in front of the apartment building at 9 Depot Court.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to South Shore Hospital with minor injuries. The truck is owned by Harold Litchfield Trucking Company out of Cohasset. The driver of the truck was identified as Harold Litchfield, (74) years of age, from Cohasset.
Because of the large amount of property damage, the Cohasset Police Department was assisted by an accident re-constructionist from the Weymouth Police Department. The Massachusetts State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection Unit (“Truck Team”) was also called to the scene to inspect the dump truck to help rule out mechanical failure.
Chief Hussey of the Cohasset Police Department stated, “We were extremely lucky today that no one was seriously injured or killed. This area of the village is known for heavy pedestrian traffic and its proximity to a preschool.”

Four vehicles were towed from the scene and parts of Cohasset Village were closed for approximately 2 hours. No citations have been issued at this point and the accident remains under investigation by the Cohasset Police, with assistance from the Weymouth and State Police.
